Traffic safety |
At the Monomoy Civic Association Annual Members Meeting in July 2026, traffic safety emerged as a critical concern, with speeding and encroachments at intersections and corners identified as two key issues requiring attention. Four members volunteered to form a Traffic Safety Committee and begin evaluating these concerns and potential solutions.
The committee moved quickly, reviewing the traffic safety recommendations contained in the Monomoy Area Plan previously developed by the MCA and creating a community survey to better understand members’ experiences, concerns, and priorities. The survey was distributed to the membership in early August and received an overwhelming response, providing valuable input to guide the committee’s work.
In addition to analyzing the survey results, the committee worked with the Nantucket Police Department to place a radar unit on Monomoy Road for three days to collect traffic-volume and speeding data. Committee members also met with the Department of Public Works (DPW) to better understand the Town’s rules, guidelines, and policies regarding encroachments and their impact on visibility and roadway safety.
This remains a work in progress, but significant information has already been gathered. Below you will find a four-page summary highlighting the key findings and takeaways from the community survey, followed by the complete 30-page survey results and supporting data for those interested in a more detailed review.
